DENVER -- Denver police are looking for a man who escaped police custody Wednesday afternoon.

Eugene Martinez, 48, escaped from custody at Denver Police Headquarters around noon, police said in a Crime Alert bulletin.  A source told FOX31 Denver he was able to get out his handcuffs, but did not specify how.

He is wanted for failure to register as a sex offender.

"Martinez has an extensive history of sexual assault in both Pueblo and Denver dating to 1994," the bulletin said.

He is about 5-feet-5 and weighs about 120 pounds. He has a tattoo on his chest of a guitar with wings and the name Diane. He also has a scar on his forehead.

Martinez was last seen wearing a black zip-up hoodie and black jeans. He had blue sweat pants under his jeans.

Anyone who sees Martinez should call police a 720-913-STOP (7867).
