BOULDER COUNTY — A man from Longmont died after his canoe capsized at Brainard Lake over Labor Day weekend, according to sheriff’s deputies.

The Boulder County Coroner identified the man as 51-year-old Daniel Stechman. The cause and manner of his death is still under investigation.

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Stechman was on the lake with another family member when the canoe capsized just after 11 a.m. Stechman tried to swim to shore but was unsuccessful.

Two fisherman saw Stechman struggling in the water and pulled him to the shoreline. They attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Cmdr. Rick Brough said that Stechman may have suffered a heart attack.

Deputies said both Stechman and his relative were wearing life jackets at the time. Stechman’s relative was able to make it to the shore without injuries.

Authorities said there are no indications of foul play.
