COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A car thief in Colorado Springs got more than he or she bargained for on Tuesday night, when a toddler wound up being in the back of a vehicle stolen from the front of a home.

According to Colorado Springs Police, the theft was reported at 981 South Union Boulevard around 10 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived on scene, officers were further advised that a 2-year-old was in the back of the car when it was stolen.

While officers were conducting their initial investigation, a patrol officer spotted the stolen vehicle about a half mile away in the 200 block of Whitman Road. After recovering the vehicle, officers found the missing child in the backseat, asleep and unharmed.

Police did not have a suspect description as of early Tuesday morning, but they are on in the early stage of an investigation into the theft.
