BOULDER, Colo. — The Naval Academy’s search for a missing student ended in Boulder this week, when an AWOL member of the Academy was arrested on child pornography charges.

The Boulder Police Department reported that Bret Butler, 21, was arrested on one charge of possession and one charge of distribution of child pornography on Thursday. The arrest came after an investigation that spanned the better part of seven months, police indicated.

Police said Butler posed as a juvenile female online in an effort to procure pornographic photos of children, which he then shared online. Butler had more than 20 sexually-graphic images of children on his cell phone and computers when he was arrested, according to police.

One of those computers had been issued to Butler by the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was a student. He had been listed as AWOL by the Academy until his arrest on Thursday.

Butler is being held at the Boulder County Jail. His bond has been set at $200,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. Friday.
