DENVER — Starting Friday, one Denver Zoo hippopotamus will get a better birthday party than most humans could hope for.

Zookeepers have planned a six-day celebration for Bertie the hippo, including public hippo demonstrations at 11 a.m. daily, an historic hippo display and a hippo-sized card for children to sign. The celebration will wrap up on August 21, Bertie’s official 57th “BertDay.”

Also, any guest who can show ID proving that their legal name is “Bert” (Bert, Robert, Roberta, Bertha, Herbert, Norbert, Berthold…) will get free zoo admission during the event.

Bertie is the zoo’s oldest animal and the second-oldest hippo in North America, the zoo said in a media release. It has also lived at the zoo longer than any other tenant, having arrived from New York on December 16, 1958.
