Website tempts travelers with free bottle of wine to skip I-70 traffic
DENVER — They say good things come to those who wait. That’s one way of describing the deals section of the revamped website GoI70.com.
The site was created in 2009 as a way for CDOT and the I-70 Coalition to tell travelers about traffic patterns along I-70 in the mountains.
GoI70.com posts weekly and seasonal travel forecasts and gives suggestions on how to avoid peak travel times.
One section of the website offers deals from local businesses for travelers who delay their return to the metro area.
For example, Hotel Chateau Chamonix in Georgetown is offering a free bottle of wine when you mention GoI70.com during any Sunday check-in.
Peppino’s Pizza & Subs in Frisco offers $3 giant pizza slices after 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
GoI70.com also offers information about carpool, parking and bus services from metro area locations to the mountains.
I-70 has long been a headache for outdoors enthusiasts in both the winter and summer months.
CDOT has been working on a project to widen the highway at the Twin Tunnels, just east of Idaho Springs.
The widening project is expected to lessen congestion, but “certainly won’t solve the challenges faced by the I-70 mountain corridor,” said Margaret Bowes of the I-70 Coalition.AlertMe
