New IKEA apps lets you place furniture in your home, virtually

The IKEA catalog is a classic yearly tradition for the big blue box store. This year the Swedish company is adding a new digital feature. Using the Android or iOS app you can now see what a piece of furniture will look like in your home before you even leave your house.

Place the catalog (or a printout of the front cover) on your floor where you want to place the furniture. Then, load up the app and select the 3D view (I found the icon on page 171). Point your smartphone or tablet camera at the catalog and it will insert a 3D model of the piece of furniture into your room.  You can walk around it and see it from different angles. It’s called “augmented reality” and it’s pretty impressive.

There were a few glitches when we tested it. Sometimes if you move too far back the furniture would disappear. Sometimes the furniture would shrink and we would have to reset the app to get it back to normal size.

Minus some growing pains, it’s an amazing feature that can help give you a good idea of how a piece of furniture might fit into your home without having to borrow a pick-up truck from the neighbor.
