Kirk takes a look at the Psychometry App.

We often hear about smartphone and tablet apps that focus on new high-tech ideas.  Sometimes the coolest apps actually combine a classic idea with new technology.  That's exactly what a local photographer and professor at CU Denver is doing.

We met Carol Golemboski at her basement studio in her home in Lakewood.

"I make all of my photographs in the darkroom but they're a combination of photographs and drawings," she explained.

You won't find any digital cameras in her studio.  She is proud to be a traditional photographer, 100% film.

"I'm known as one of the holdouts who continues to stick with the dark room. I love to work in the dark room," added Golemboski.

When she started working on an iPad app instead of a traditional photobook, her friends and peers were a bit surprised.

"I wanted there to be things that you could normally find in a traditional book like curator's essay and also things that you could never find in a traditional book like video," said Golemboski.

That's exactly what her iPad app, Psychometry, is all about.  It's an interactive app featuring her abstract photo artwork along with an interactive look behind the scenes.  It includes dark room notes, she calls them her darkroom recipe book.  It also has an interactive walkthrough of the darkroom process.

"On this page you can press the developer and the safe lights go on, the whole thing goes red, by tapping the trays you can simulate moving a photographic print from one tray to the next," said Golemboski as she walked us through the app.

The Psychometry app was chosen out of 5,000 by the Independent Publishers for an outstanding e-book achievement award.

The iPad app is $9.99 and available right now in the App Store/
