Two men charged with stealing from Black Forest fire area

DENVER — Two men were arrested Monday on suspicion of stealing scrap metal from the properties of people in the area affected by the Black Forest fire.

Dominique Smith, 23, and Phillip Madden, 26, were stopped by El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies about 10:15 a.m. on Black Forest Road near McFerran Road, EPCSO reported. Deputies noticed suspicious pieces of metal in the back of the suspects’ Dodge pickup truck.

During the stop, a Black Forest resident called police to make a theft report. One of the deputies noticed that the Dodge’s truck had the same license plate number that the resident had reported seeing during the theft.

The deputies arrested Smith and Madden. Investigation of the truck revealed more stolen scrap metal inside the vehicle as well as some metal from a second victim in the same area, deputies said.

The suspects were booked into the on two counts of misdemeanor theft and one count of third degree criminal trespass. Madden was also booked on an unrelated traffic warrant.
