FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A brief but violent thunderstorm struck a tree on the Colorado State University campus Friday, splitting it to pieces.

The lightning hit the tree at about 4 p.m., after a flash flood warning was issued for Larimer county.

Officers put up caution tape around the tree, where pieces of bark were sent flying.

Crowds gathered around the Trial Garden on the CSU campus to take pictures and collect pieces of the tree as souvenirs.

People reportedly heard the loud boom of lightning striking the tree from blocks away. Luckily, no one was reported injured.
