DENVER -- Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor helped dedicate Colorado's new Justice Center Thursday.

Surrounded by dignitaries including Gov. John Hickenlooper, Sotomayor talked about the majesty of law including and said the new Justice Center "conveys the same sense of gravity that the Supreme Court does in Washington."

The $250 million building across the street from the state capitol opened earlier this year. It features a glass façade and dome that Sotomayor said conveys a sense of openness.

She called it a "magnificent tribute by the people of Colorado to the rule of law that the building embodies."

The building contains a courthouse that is the home of the State Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

The nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice also talked about the buildings namesake, Colorado's 29th governor Ralph L. Carr.

Carr was governor from 1939 to 1943 and led the state during a difficult time when Japanese Americans were placed in internment camps during World War II.

Carr opposed making internment camps in Colorado and was widely criticized for his beliefs -- which eventually forced him from public office.

Earlier in the day Sotomayor met with school children urging them to get an education and dream big.

"When I was your age, I didn't know that there was a Supreme Court," she said. " You can't dream unless you know what the possibilities are because dreams don't just pop up in your head. You find them by taking a chance."

Wednesday Sotomayor was spotted at Benny's Restaurant in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood. She posed with workers of the famous Mexican style restaurant.
