DENVER -- During a seven month period in 2012 veterans say Alyson Ramer dishonored military service people by pretending to be an American hero herself.
“It's actually shocking to hear someone would do that. They rely on the valor of other people that have bled, sweat, and lost their lives,” said Denver veteran Jay Lobins. He was angry to learn about what police say Alyson Ramer did.
Court records show police began investigating Ramer last year after she posted comments on her Facebook saying, “I just took a bullet for your freedoms, had a bomb blow up in my face for your luxuries.”
In another post she wrote, “I had men die in my arms so you could roam about daily. I was tortured by grotesque people to protect you."
The problem is that while thousands of Americans like Jay Lobins did serve for our country, Police say Ramer did not.
Last year investigators visited Ramer at her home on Grape Street in Denver.
Inside they say they found military uniforms and a military ID card.
Police say Ramer lied, telling people she'd served in Iraq and Afghanistan and used that lie to get discounts, gain sympathy, and even employment at the home of one of Cherry Creek's most prominent plastic surgeons.
But investigators were most alarmed when they found a young foster child living in Ramer's home.
Ramer and her partner were in the process of adopting. Police say Ramer misrepresented her fake military record to the Colorado Department of Human Services as part of her application to be a foster parent.
“It tarnishes the record of people who have fought and died for our country,” said Lobins.
There were no outraged veterans in court Thursday when Alyson Ramer entered a guilty plea for attempting to influence a public official during the adoption process.
Until now she's gone unnoticed - unlike the real heroes - those who died serving their country.AlertMe
