DENVER -- A 26-year-old former employee of a Lakewood Sprint store was sentenced to 22 years in prison Friday for robbing that store two years ago.

Spencer Brewer was one of two masked men who burst into the Sprint store on West Colfax in Lakewood on April 8, 2011. Brewer had worked at the store and with his "insider information they knew exactly where the high-priced phones and money were kept," said Pam Russell with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said they ordered the store employee to the floor at gunpoint and then tried to steal the store safe from a stockroom. "They dragged it through the store, but gave up because it was so heavy," Russell said.

Both men left the store with a bag full of cell phones worth $15,000 and about $1,000 cash.

Detectives were able to collect DNA evidence from the scene, which they linked to Brewer, whose DNA was already in a national database because of prior felony convictions involving armed robbery, Russell said.

February 4, Brewer pled guilty to aggravated robbery and one violent crime count.

"Prosecutors argued that Brewer was a menace and threat to our community as they asked the court for the maximum of 32 years in prison," Russell said. The judge gave him 22 years.

Brewer's accomplice remains at large. Anyone with information regarding this case should contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP or call Lakewood police at 303-987-7111.
