WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- An SUV driving the wrong way on US Highway 36 near the Church Ranch Boulevard exit collided with another vehicle in a fiery crash that killed one person and injured three others Wednesday morning.

According to Westminster police, a call reporting an accident and car fire came in at approximately 3 a.m. when a Ford Escape went the wrong way on the eastbound lanes of US 36 and slammed into an Acura coupe.

A passenger in the Ford was found dead at the scene. Police have not yet released the victim's name pending notification of next of kin.

The other three victims were also taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Westminster Police Investigator Cheri Spottke told the Daily Camera drugs or alcohol are suspected as being factors in the crash.

US 36 was closed from the Wadsworth Parkway to Sheridan Boulevard until about 8 a.m.

This portion of US 36 is under construction, but Spottke said the initial investigation does not indicate that it was a factor in the crash.
