DENVER — Though the measure isn’t expected to gain much ground in a Democratic-controlled state Legislature, Colorado lawmakers are scheduled to debate a bill that would ban abortion on Thursday.

Not only would the Republican-sponsored bill make abortions illegal, it would make the act of performing an abortion a felony in Colorado. The bill would, however, exempt cases where an abortion could be used as a reasonable method to prevent the death of the mother.

The House committee that is scheduled to hear the bill Thursday is controlled by Democrats who have offered public opposition to the proposal.
