Windsor man jumps in frozen pond to rescue woman trapped inside car
WINDSOR, Colo. — It seems there are still good people out there. On Thursday, one of them proved it by jumping into a frozen pond to save a woman after her vehicle slid off the road and became lodged upside down in the body of water.
Firefighters with Windsor-Severance Fire Rescue said the Good Samaritan Rick Merlino saw one of the car’s tires sticking out of broken ice in the pond near the Kodak/Carestream campus where he works shortly after 5 p.m. during his drive home.
He then pulled over, dove into the pond and pulled out a Kimberly Garcia, a 22-year-old Evans woman.
“The passenger compartment was completely under water,” Windsor-Severance Fire Rescue spokesman Todd Vess said. “He saw her struggling to get out the back of the car and got into the water and helped her out.”
Garcia was treated for minor injuries and released Thursday night.AlertMe
