Caretaker arrested after missing 2-year-old found

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Police cancelled an Amber Alert when missing Fountain 2-year-old Essence Lovato was discovered Wednesday. On Thursday, they confirmed that the woman who was with her when she went missing has been arrested.

Colorado Springs police said Tonia Shetina, 28, has been charged with second-degree kidnapping and motor vehicle theft. Shetina told Lovato’s mother that she was taking the toddler to her grandparents house on Monday.

Lovato wasn’t seen again until Wednesday, when she was discovered safe at her home in Fountain at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Police said Shetina was last seen in a green 2000 Honda Accord with temporary tags, but have not said if that is the vehicle Shetina is accused of stealing.
