NEW YORK (CNN) — An argument over the T.V. show “The Walking Dead” ended with a New York man in jail, and his girlfriend in the hospital.

Police say it started with text messages between 26-year-old Jared Gurman and his girlfriend, Jessica Gelderman. The girlfriend went over to Gurman’s apartment, and police say she found Gurman was standing outside with a semi-automatic rifle.

At that point, the conversation escalated to violence, with Gurman shooting Gelderman once in the back.

Nassau County police spokesman Raymond Cote confirmed that the dispute was indeed about “The Walking Dead,” an AMC show which features a sheriff’s deputy waking up in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by zombies.

“He (Gurman) feels strongly about the possibility that some military mishap could occur, causing some tragic consequence,” Cote said. “She (Gelderman) felt that it was ridiculous. He’s passionate about it and that’s what started the argument and it just escalated to the point that it did.”

Gurman is being charged with attempted murder. Gelderman is in serious condition.
