WELLINGTON, Colo. – A Wellington man tried to use his gun to ward off two intruders Thursday night, but instead had the gun turned on himself as the attackers used it to assault him, police said.

The attack happened at the man’s home in the 8100 block of South 1st Street around 8 p.m., said John Schulz of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

Schulz said the 28-year-old victim allegedly fired a single shot from a long gun at two intruders but did not hit anyone.

“The gun was then apparently taken from the man and used to assault him,” Schultz said.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Schultz said the attackers are known to the victim and deputies are currently searching for them although they have not yet been identified.

“Investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public,” Schultz said.
