Former pastor arrested on sex assault charge

DENVER – A former pastor was arrested Tuesday on a charge of sexual assault involving a form member of a youth group he used to work for, deputies said.

Matt Capranelli, 41, worked as a youth pastor at Mountain View Community Church in Highlands Ranch, said Sergeant Ron Hanavan of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The charge against him regards a former female youth group attendee and stemmed from an investigation that started in June 2012, Hanavan said.

Capranelli was arrested in El Paso. He posted a $50,000 bond, Hanavan said.

Capranelli faces eight charges including Sexual Assault on a Child by one in a position of trust, Hanavan said.

Reached on the phone by FOX31 Denver, Capranelli said,  “I have nothing to say.  I have a lawyer, so…thank you.”

Detectives are asking the public for tips in this case as well in case there may be other victims. Anyone with information is asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 303-784-7840.
