The staff member killed  in an attack in the kitchen at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility near Ordway in southeastern Colorado was at the prison on her day off.

That’s according to Arkansas Valley Warden Steve Hartley.

Sgt. Mary Ricard, 55, died when authorities say an inmate attacked her in the kitchen Monday morning. Another guard, Sgt. Lori  Gann, was severely injured.

Gann was in critical condition at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo.

The attack while breakfast was being prepared was described as an isolated incident.

There were reports Tuesday the suspect is an inmate serving up to life in prison for the kidnap and rape of a young teenage girl in Colorado Springs.

The Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility remained on complete lockdown Tuesday while agents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation worked at the crime scene.
