It happened around 2:30 p.m. outside Main Street Elementary School at the intersection of 53rd street and Main.

Aerial shots from KTLA-TV of the scene show a silver sedan draped in yellow tape parked on the sidewalk.

Four boys, ranging in age from 11 to 4 years old, were taken to a hospital suffering serious injuries.  All of the injured are stable and expected to survive.

The driver of the vehicle, Preston Carter, did not appear to be injured.

Carter, who claims he turns 101-years-old next month, say he was backing out of the parking lot of a Food 4 Less supermarket when his brakes failed.

But not everyone believes it was an accident. Some witnesses told reporters that Carter had been honking at children who were running behind his car while he tried to back up.

They say he appeared to become frustrated and hit the gas, zooming backwards, and lost control of the car. The crash is still under investigation.

Family members say Carter has a valid license, but that his driving days are over.
