Rock slide kills one, injures another on Hagerman Peak

PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. – One hiker is dead and another injured after a rock slide occurred on Hagerman Peak Saturday afternoon.

The two hikers were part of a group of five; the three other hikers were not injured in the slide.

According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, a search and rescue team was airlifted to a location near the victims. The hiker who was killed succumbed to serious chest injuries before the rescue team arrived.

The second victim, along with the other hikers and the rescue crew, was airlifted by a National Guard helicopter from HAATS (High Altitude ARNG Aviation Training Site) in Eagle.

The injured hiker was taken by ambulance to Aspen Valley Hospital.

Hagerman Peak is part of the Elk Mountains, and is located approximately 11 miles from Aspen.
