MT. EVANS, Colo. -- The road from Echo Lake to the summit of Mount Evans opened Friday.

State Highway 5 is the highest paved road in North America.

Mt. Evans is one of Colorado's 54 famed "14ers." The top is 14,265 feet above sea level. The peak is a 51-mile drive from Denver via I-70 and Idaho Springs.

The opening of the road to the top of Mt. Evans means all of Colorado's seasonal highways are open heading into the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
