Firefighters at site of construction accident in Clifton, NJ. May 7, 2012

CLIFTON, NJ (CNN) — A construction worker fell 40 feet into a vat of acid in New Jersey and survived, thanks to the heroics of a coworker.

The accident happened Monday afternoon at a metal tubing maker in Clifton, NJ.

The worker had burns from head to toe and was in a state of shock when fire crews arrived.

A coworker had already jumped in and pulled him out. Both were hurt but are expected to live.

Fire officials say the injured workers were part of a crew called in to add a second roof to the building.

Federal, state and local agencies are investigating.
