ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. -- It was a somber day Wednesday at Grandview High School in Arapahoe County.

Just as the day was beginning, students were told that their classmate, 18-year-old Millard Tate, III, died in an auto accident early Wednesday morning.

"It's just a sad loss for our school," says classmate Danielle Cargill.

The Colorado State Patrol says Tate was driving southbound on E-470 when he lost control and struck the inside of the guardrail. The vehicle rolled, ejecting the 18-year-old.

Students FOX31 Denver talked to described the young man as "quiet" and say he played on the football team as a freshman.

A knock on the door of the Tate household went unanswered. A next-door-neighbor says the family has lived there for more than a decade.

Funeral services are pending.
