DENVER -- Denver Police estimate 5,000 people crowded into Civic Center Park in downtown Denver Friday afternoon to see or participate in the annual 4/20 marijuana 'party.'

April 20th, referred to as “4/20,” is typically a big day for marijuana parties. The main event happened at 4:20 p.m.

Denver Police said there were no major problems with the large crowd. Officers issued 71 tickets for possession of a substance. They also issued one ticket for drinking in public and they took one person into custody on a warrant.

An event organizer told FOX31 Denver's Nick Emmons there was a record turnout in Denver because people weren't allowed to celebrate on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder.

Administrators are trying to put a stop to the annual smoke-out, so the campus was closed Friday to everyone except students and faculty who could show proper ID.
