EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — An airman who escaped from Air Force custody Wednesday was captured Friday according to police.

Herbert Mullens was found near Rampart Range and Loy Creek Rd. in western El Paso County near the Teller County line just before 1 p.m.

Teller County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers say residents called to say the suspect was going door-to-door trying to find someone to get him a rental car.

They say he was on an ATV 4-wheel off road vehicle when deputies found him and took him into custody.

He was being transported to the Teller County JailĀ  to face charges related to wrongful use of a controlled substance when he escaped from his escorts Wednesday night in Woodland Park.

He now faces charges including escape from the military and giving wrong information to a police officer.

Mullens was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.
