THORNTON, Colo. – 14-year-old Jarren Lewis was released from the hospital Monday after being struck by a pickup truck Saturday in Thornton.
It happened in the 3500 block of East 168th Ave.
Jarren's brother Seth, 22, and another man were killed in the accident. The three were walking on the shoulder of the road when they were hit from behind by the Toyota pickup.
The driver has been identified as Michael Grennan, 33, of Loveland. Police suspect Grennen may have been using his cell phone when he swerved and hit the three as they were walking. He was arrested.
A family friend spoke on behalf of J.J. and Seth Lewis' Mother Monday. "She's not mad at the driver. It was an accident," says Lynda Slavens."
Grennan's father issued a statement asking for prayers for the victims and his son.
"We as a family are totally devastated by this horrific accident," said Pat Grennan, Michael Grennan's father. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims.
"At this point, all we can say is how sorry we are and hope that people will pray for the victims, their families and also for Mike. We will continue to pray for the young man’s recovery. I hope that, God willing, he will recover.”
FOX31 Denver has learned that Grennan has a lengthy arrest record, including charges of driving under the influence and animal cruelty.
Witnesses tell police that the car suddenly veered to the right shoulder and hit the victims from behind as they walked on the right shoulder of the road.
Speed doesn’t appear to be a factor, according to Thornton police spokesman Matt Barnes, “but appears it may be a case of distracted driving due to cell phone use.”
The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of distracted driving resulting in death.
The driver's cellphone was also taken into custody.AlertMe
