NIWOT, Colo. — Niwot High School was evacuated early Friday afternoon when students and staff reported a strange smell that caused some of them to cough.

Paramedics checked out about 20 students and staff at the school. Most had sore throats and irritated eyes.

The Longmont Times Call reports spokeswoman for Mountain View Fire and Rescue says there were reports pepper spray was released into the ventilation system. However, the St. Vrain School District says it might’ve been something in the kiln in a ceramics classroom.

No one went to the hospital. Classes resumed by 1:30 p.m.
