Chaffee County barn fire kills fugitive

SALIDA, Colo. — The body found in a burned barn southwest of Buena Vista has been identified as David Butler the Chaffee County Coroner’s Office announced Monday.

Butler, 46, was wanted by authorities for violating his parole for manslaughter according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies got word on Thursday that the fugitive was in the area of Mt. Princeton. They found his pickup truck and launched a search for him.

Late Thursday afternoon, they saw smoke coming from a barn. When firefighters arrived, it was fully involved in flames.

Fire destroyed the barn and they found the body of a man inside that was burned beyond recognition. The coroner identified him by using dental records.

Investigators haven’t said if Butler’s death was suicide or an accident.
