SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. – An 18-year-old from Pewaukee, Wisconsin died Thursday when he skied into a snowmaking valve shed at Copper Mountain, the Summit County coroner said.

The incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. on Andy’s Encore, an intermediate trail.

Witnesses say Patrick Sievert was skiing with his family when, for reasons unknown, he veered off the trail and into the shed.

“Copper Mountain Ski Patrol started saving measures and got the decedent to Copper Medical Center where further life-saving measures were continued unsuccessfully,” said coroner Joanne Richardson.

Sievert died from skull fractures.

Richardson said Sievert was a high school senior and arrived in Colorado four days ago.
