GREELEY, Colo. -- Francisca Martinez along with her friends and five other children cried and hugged at the very spot where her 2-year-old died Thursday.

“I am glad he is in a better place,” said Martinez.

Martinez said she had just gotten her toddler, Herman Deangelo, out of her car and was heading into the Dollar Store on 2900 10th St when a Ford Expedition struck the child.

“I don’t know how she didn't see him there are no cars next to my car, how she did she not see him,” said Martinez.

The young mother said she grabbed her son's already limp body and held him in her arms knowing he was lost.

“I knew it when she hit him,” Martinez said.

The driver says the boy darted between park cars, but his mother insists that is not the case.

The 51-year-old driver did stop and cooperated with police.

The family says Herman’s funeral is planned for Monday.
