DENVER – A woman was hospitalized with burn wounds and smoke inhalation after a fire at her south Denver home Thursday afternoon.

Denver Fire crews responded to 2841 South Dexter St. at about 1:30 p.m.

“First-in crews noted the fire was blowing out the front of the house,” said Denver Fire Lt. Phil Champagne.

Champagne said the woman and five dogs had fled the home before fire crews arrived.

The flames were extinguished within 15 minutes, but not before causing extensive damage.

Champagne said the fire appears to have originated in or near a rear bedroom where the woman was using a portable space heater.

The cause of the fire, however, remains under investigation.
