AURORA, Colo. -- The first round of Las Vegas cuts are done on American Idol, and those cuts were deep.
At least two of the four Colorado contestants who made it to Las Vegas are now out.
FOX31 Denver spoke to the mothers of the two contestants who remain.
27-year-old Devon Jones of Aurora went from the choir stands at Overland High School to the national stage of American Idol.
"To know your child went from 132,000 people to at least the top 60 is huge. We're so proud. I can’t even explain to you how proud we are of Devon," says Devon's mom, Andrea Jones.
We first saw Devon at the aspen auditions.
It was his third try on the show in 11 years.
"I feel really good. Relieved," he told us after getting a coveted yellow ticket over the summer that guaranteed a trip to Hollywood.
19-year-old Jairon Jackson--a Gateway High School graduate is also in Las Vegas.
He works as a host and server at village inn. But his dream is to sing--and it was working for him—until Thursday night—when he got cut.
Jackson performed with Colorado's third idol contestant, Richie Law of Centennial. His real last name is Lawson.
The 19-year-old has real singing credentials.
He's on an opera scholarship from a university in Nebraska.
Awards and trophies fill his home, and he's cut a demo album.
"The country music fans already know Richie," says his mom, Melanie Lawson. She says his website gets 75,000 hits a month.
But the focus got away from the music in Wednesday's episode.
"We're going to do this my way, and that's it," Law tells the camera during practice with a group called Mit.
"His problem is he talks and he doesn't listen," said a singer in Law’s group.
"To see him portrayed that way on Idol is a little bit disappointing, but it's also television. The way I have to look at it is, he got 22 minutes of air time in front of millions of people," says his mom.
She says her son is a sweet person with a western attitude to take charge.
And Thursday night, with a new partner, the judges loved him. He moves on to next week.
Idol's final Colorado contestant 25-year-old Mathenee Treco of Centennial made it to Las Vegas, but his journey ended there.
The judges will make another big round of cuts next Wednesday to whittle the group down to 24.AlertMe
