DENVER -- For now, the Denver County Jail is Kathleen Sanchez's home, and she misses her children.

"They're just gone. They disappeared, and now I'm being held in this place like I'm a bad person, and I'm not," said Sanchez.

Her three children are now in protective custody.

Kathleen and her husband Kenny were shopping in the Disabled Veterans of America Thrift Store in Lakewood when an off-duty police officer allegedly saw them mistreating their 3-year-old child. The child also appeared to be malnourished.

A 3-year-old child should weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. This child weighed 19 pounds.

"All they told us is because my husband smacking my daughter," said Sanchez.

Kathleen and Kenny Sanchez were later arrested and charged with child abuse. She says she's not guilty and says the same about her husband.

"You've never seen him be violent?" asked FOX31 Denver reporter Justin Joseph.

"No, it was the first time. She was throwing a fit in the store," replied Sanchez. "I guess from what (police) said it was on the leg. But, it was in the face. I don't know. It's really difficult because my kids are gone."

Sanchez and her husband were unemployed when the crime allegedly occurred. A family member tells FOX31 Denver the child was unwanted, which is why the couple abused this child and not their other two children.
