They’ve taken down the websites of Visa, Mastercard, eBay and several government agencies, and now the hacking group known as “anonymous” vows another cyber attack Friday and every Friday from now on.

Members of the group call themselves “hactivists.” They post strange videos that have gone viral on YouTube. “Dear brothers and sisters, now is the time to open your eyes,” one of them begins.

Their hacks have been mostly annoying up to this point. They’ve crashed websites and clogged or prevented access to some big sites.

The National Security Agency expresses concern that these hackers are getting more knowledgeable and could go for something much bigger such as crippling the U.S. power grid.

No word what the group’s target will be Friday. Computer experts offer some common sense advice: make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — What started as a stolen car traffic stop at Broadway and Dartmouth around 4:30 p.m. Thursday ended several hours later when a police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly had been threatening people, including officers.

The investigation into this police shooting continues Friday.

According to Englewood Police spokesman Brad Johnson, officers arrested the driver of the stolen car and at least one other person and were waiting for a tow truck when a man in a white Mustang pulled into the lot. Police recognized him as a possible known associate of the other two.

Officers say the suspect “backed up like he was going to take a run” at them in the car, but instead, he “made a move like he was reaching for a gun.” That’s when an officer shot the man, Johnson told FOX31 Denver.

“The subject was reaching for what appeared to be a weapon in his waistband,” Johnson says.

Lonnie Eastwood and his family were in a vehicle when they turned the corner and came upon the scene. They saw and heard two police officers yelling at the man in the Mustang.

“They told him to stop, get out of the car,” Eastwood says. “The next thing I know I just started seeing them shooting. I didn’t know if they were shooting toward us or shooting the guy in the car. It freaked me out.”

The man was transported to Swedish Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

A group of customers from the Walgreens marched across the parking lot to an RTD bus where investigators questioned them about what they saw happen. Like the Eastwoods, they were pretty shaken up. “When they started shooting, I hollered at them to get down,” Eastwood says.

Johnson says the suspect did not shoot, but investigators did find a gun in his car, and police are working to confirm whether the suspects taken into custody earlier were known associates to the man who was shot.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the shooting, which is standard procedure in officer involved shootings.

Retro style and pop culture are alive and well on the corner of 14th and Curtis in Denver at The Curtis- A Doubletree by Hilton themed hotel. This newer property is located right across from the Denver Performing Arts Complex and just 2 blocks from the pedestrian friendly 16th Street Mall. The Curtis is the perfect spot to see some of Denver’s best sights, catch a show and then spend the night in their quirky, fun and “happy” hotel.

The entire vibe of the Curtis revolves around playful and happy memories. The lobby exudes warmth and décor reminiscent of the 50s and 60s. Upon check-in, my wife and I were handed warm, chocolate-chip cookies—not your small ones mind you—but full-sized, industrial strength cookies like my mom never made.

Right next to the check-in is their 5 & Dime where you can pick up some classic retro candies, sodas and games, including a submarine toy that came as a gift inside cereal boxes back in the 50s. I felt my childhood memories start to resurface as I reached for the toy as a gift for my grandson.

Putting a smile on the face of guests is all part of the experience and the front office staff are well versed in the Rock, Paper, Scissors game, should the mood strike you and you wish to challenge for a cookie. Vintage board games like Candyland and Boggle are also available in the lobby and can be borrowed for in-room use.

Each of the 16 floors is decorated in a particular theme, from one hit wonders to chick flicks to fun and games. The mysterious 13th floor (aka: Dun Dun Dunnn!) is the scary floor. A photo of Jack Nicholson in his role from The Shining greets you when you exit the elevator

The 8th level is dedicated to sci-fi and doubles as the pet friendly floor. For a reasonable charge, the staff at the Curtis will pamper your pooch or kitty with all the creature comforts, including food, water, treats, and dog walking while you pursue your own fun.

Each of the guest rooms and suites are adorned with eclectic pop décor and our suite had an amazing view of the Denver skyline and the Rocky Mountains. One of the things that stands out in my mind after staying at many different hotels all over the world is how much attention is given to the little details, and here, they have done it right. From the upscale bath products to the accessible power outlet right next to the bed to the little figurine of Dudley Do Right above the toilet, everything combined to provide an exceptional experience.

Their room service menu is equally well thought out and you can order a variety of snacks and drinks. Keeping with the fun theme, we received non-traditional amenities that featured Rice Krispies® squares cut in small triangles, like sandwiches; a small Etch A Sketch®; Pop Rocks®; old-fashioned root beer; and Bazooka® bubblegum. Again, all features of this hotel are designed to contribute to the happiness theme.

My wife and I didn’t have to go any farther than the first floor to eat at their restaurant, The Corner Office. The atmosphere is something that you might imagine as a place out of the television show Mad Men with an avocado palette, white upholstered walls, mosaic tile accents, and indirect orange lighting.

There are a variety of 50s era clocks all stuck at 5 pm, which, of course, is martini time.

The cuisine is described as global comfort food, and indeed it is. Dinner options include Southern fried chicken and waffles, baked lobster mac and cheese and low country shrimp and grits. They even had the harder to find ramen soup dishes made with chicken, confit pork shoulder, crispy pork belly, mustard greens, and house-made chicharrón.

Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday and features Funkytown Favorites such as sweet corn brown butter crepes with crème fraiche, an Irish breakfast and Israeli shakshuka made with a poached egg, polenta and pipérade.

From March 25- July 8, 2012 the Curtis will be offering an exclusive special package in conjunction with the Denver Art Museum called the Curtis Couture- Make it Work! This will include accommodations, a breakfast buffet and two VIP tickets to the upcoming Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective exhibit. Denver will be the only U.S. city offering this look back at 40 years of the designer’s work including 200 haute couture garments, photographs, drawings, and films on Saint Laurent.

For more information about the Curtis or the Yves Saint Laurent package, visit www.thecurtis.com or call 800-525 6651.

FTC Disclosure- The food and in-room amenities were sponsored by the Curtis Hotel for this story. Room costs were assumed by the author.

DENVER — Angie Webb is a busy mother of three who had a hard time sleeping for months.

“It just doesn’t happen. I toss and turn all night, and it can get aggravating,” she said.

The lack of sleep really bothered her because she was grouchy and forgetful.

There is an entire industry of products geared toward people like Angie, but how do you know if any of them work? We gave Angie five very different sleep products to try at home and see if any of them could help her sleep.

#1-First she tried a $200 pair of sheets called Sheex. They are made out of the same performance fabric as athletic clothing. They claim to wick away moisture, breathe better than cotton and help keep you cool.

“These are the most comfortable sheets I’ve ever slept on,” Angie said. She says the Sheex absolutely helped her stay cool, and get a better night’s sleep.

#2 Gadget number two is the Dreammate Wristband that sells for $75. It claims to stimulate acupuncture points on the wrist and cause the release of melatonin. Angie says the wristband did not help her sleep.

#3- Product number three is the Chillow that sells for $25. It is a thin and soft device you put inside your pillow case to keep your pillow cool.

Angie says it did stay cool, but almost too cool for February. She says it would probably feel better in the summertime.

*4- Gadget number four is the Zeo Sleep Manager that sells for $150. It’s an alarm clock and wireless headband that monitors and records your sleep patterns. It gave Angie all sorts of interesting information about how much REM sleep and deep sleep she got each night, and it helped identify lifestyle issues that she could change.

“It would be very helpful in the long run,” she said. “It doesn’t really help you sleep in the short term.” For Angie, the Zeo was not a big help.

#5-Gadget number five is a free white noise app on Angie’s iPhone. She picked one called rain downpour, and she says it’s great.

“It was very soothing,” she said.

So out of all the products, Angie says the Sheex and the white noise app helped her the most. Of course these are the experiences of just one person, and other people may have different results.

There are also products aimed at helping you wake up. One is called GoLite Blu.

DENVER — It can be as destructive to your marriage as infidelity or money problems, and it is something every couple deals with at some point during their relationship–nagging.

The nation’s leading marriage researcher, who happens to live in Denver, says if you don’t deal with it then it can lead to divorce.

Jackie and David Gebel know how detrimental nagging can be for a relationship.

It’s “date night” for the couple at the Mercury Café in Denver. Times like this are important for the pair, because years ago time together was a source of nagging for Jackie.

“I was at home with the little ones and he’d come home. I’d miss him. I’d want to date. I’d want to go out. I’d want to have fun with him. He wants to come home,” she says.

“I was content to take off my shoes and relax,” says David.

Jackie says she kept nagging David about “couple time” and he avoided it.

“My belief was he didn’t want that,” she says.

David’s perspective was different.

“When in reality, I would feel defensive,” he says.

‘It’s the enemy of love,” says Dr. Howard Markman, with University of Denver’s Center for Marital and Family Studies.

Markman taught the couple how the tone of their words can damage their love.

“The person that is being nagged gets upset … not about what’s being asked, but how the other person is bringing it up,” Markman says. “Often, it’s way too negative.”

He says nagging leads to negative thoughts about your partner.

“When your partner doesn’t do something. ‘Why aren`t they doing that? It’s a small little thing. Isn’t it? Maybe he doesn`t love me.’ Or, ‘maybe she doesn’t care about me,” he says.

He says couples that don’t resolve the issue can fall out of love and eventually end their relationship.

“The best way to deal with nagging is to recognize that it’s happening. Second, stop it,” says Markman.

After 31 years of marriage, Jackie and David know they can’t dance around the issues. They’ve learned to not only talk, but to hear each other.

“Talk in a way where everyone can express ideas in a safe environment, so that you’re really hearing each other,” Jackie says. “Then, repeating what the other person says is essential.”

Markman says the bottom line is to express yourself in a positive and constructive way.

Dr. Markman will head a marriage retreat and workshop Feb. 25-26 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Denver. The cost is $999 per couple. Enrollment is limited.

The Gebel’s say you will walk away from the event with tangible skills that will help your relationship for years to come.

DENVER — Ana Ruiz’s wrecked car is just one of two painful reminders from her injury accident last Friday at the corner of Louisiana and Tennyson.

Waiting 35 minutes for an ambulance is the other one.

“I feel like I wasn`t important because I don`t speak English,” said Ruiz.

Her daughter made her way to the accident within minutes.

“It made me feel bad because my mom was hurt and I couldn`t do anything about it,” said Lydia Leon. She knew minutes counted because her mother has a history of heart problems and was having chest pains. She watched as police called for help. “He was just like calling the ambulance and I was like why don`t they get here?”

We checked, and the first call for an ambulance happened at 4:16 p.m.

No ambulance was assigned and 19 minutes later another call shows more urgency. By now Ana is more desperate.

Radio Dispatch: “Party possibly having a heart attack. Looks like it ran into another vehicle. EMS is requesting us. We will notify ALS again, however they do have the call, and they are waiting to assign and we`ll tell them code 10 for chest pain, a second time.”

But it takes another 3 minutes for the call to be assigned. By now, 22 minutes have passed and even though every one of those minutes count with chest pains, there isn’t much urgency in the voice recorded at Denver Health.

So where were all the ambulances? At least one was at Berkeley Lake providing necessary back-up for divers during a dog rescue. Denver Health says Friday was extremely busy.

“Sometimes we are going to have issues that result in human error and this one we`re lucky that it didn`t result in something more severe … we`re going to take an opportunity to take a critical look at the processes that led to it and hopefully it won`t happen again,” said James Robinson with operations at Denver Health Paramedics. He blames a software glitch for the problem and a personnel issue.

Thirty-five minutes after the initial call, an ambulance finally rescued Ana. Her daughter is thankful.

“When they call ambulances they should get there because people could really die.”

Ana was treated and released and was not suffering a heart attack.

DENVER – Denver Police have seized thousands of dollars worth of synthetic marijuana, also known as “Spice,” from a convenience store at 2405 East Colfax -roughly a block from East High School- police said.

Maher Awad, the owner of SunMart, and Abdelilah Dehry, a store clerk face charges of distribution and sale of synthetic Cannabinoids.

Police raided SunMart Wednesday after a month-long investigation, according to DPD spokesman Sonny Jackson.

“During the search of the property, Detectives seized approximately 6,400 grams (or 12 pounds) of synthetic marijuana (aka “Spice”),” Jackson said. “In addition, officers seized $36,216.50 in US Currency believed to be directly derived from the illegal sale of synthetic cannabinoids.”

Jackson said police documented items of suspected drug paraphernalia including digital scales, rolling papers and hundreds of varying glass pipes which are used to smoke marijuana, crack cocaine and methamphetamine.

FOX31 Denver spoke with several East High School students who said the store’s reputation is no secret.

“They sell pipes and stuff, and they sell stuff that kind of looks like weed, but I didn’t know what it was exactly,” said Chloe Bernard.

But some students say the clerks were strict, and they’re surprised to hear the allegations.

“If you do try to buy something like that or anything, they always ask for your ID, and that’s why I’m really shocked,” said Nesselle Williams.

At least one student who went to Sun Mart every day said this may have changed her mind.

“I don’t think they should be selling to people who are still in school,” Williams said. “They’re trying to get an education, not trying to be all hype and high when they go to class, that’s not cool.”

Police also found about 100 steroid tablets in the store. They said one of the suspects quickly told them they were only used for working out. A DPD chemist described the drugs found in the store as 70-times as potent as marijuana.

Synthetic marijuana was banned in Colorado in 2011.

BOULDER, Colo. — A Boulder County Day School student is putting her best foot forward after winning a shoe design contest sponsored by Crocs Shoes of Boulder.

The shoe company began a partnership with the school this fall and the students who participated in the design competition got a chance to see their creations Thursday.

“We just felt these kids would benefit greatly from a program such as this one,” said Headmaster Mike Shields. “Our kids jumped at the chance to learn Adobe Illustrator and how something is generated from a sketch on paper.”

The kids had to make presentations to Crocs designers during the process. The winning design went to Michelle Kofman, a 7th grader who has a passion for fashion.

“Maybe one day I will design my own fashions and shoes and become very famous,” said the winning teen.

Crocs brought a cake with icing colored with the student designs, along with boxes containing shoes the kids brought to life.

Crocs has rebounded from its troubles a few years ago with recent sales reportedly in the billions of dollars.

Both the school and company say this could be a partnership that lasts for some time.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — There are troubling new allegations about the driver of a bus that struck three students in Jefferson County this week.

FOX31 Denver has learned that 43-year-old David Wayne Shaw has at one least drunken driving conviction on his record.

And that’s raising questions about whether he should have been hired as a school bus driver.

It’s not unusual for someone with a DUI in Colorado to get their license back after a certain amount of time, especially as long as 20 years, but a person who has known this driver for more than 10 years says it’s shocking that he was ever hired as a bus driver.

Shaw was hired as a substitute bus driver for Jefferson County Schools in October 2011.

We confirmed he was convicted for driving under the influence in 1992 in Englewood, and he was part of a Denver addiction rehab program as recently as 2009.

A person who claims to have known Shaw for more than ten years is shocked he was driving a school bus.

“He’s been in and out of rehab for several years,” Shaw’s acquaintance said, who didn’t want to be identified. “At least as many years as I’ve known him he’s been in and out and kicked out because he won’t abide by the rules and keeps just keeps on drinking.”

Four girls and a boy from Summit Ridge Middle School were crossing the intersection at South Simms Street and West Bowles Avenue Tuesday afternoon, when Shaw’s bus struck three of the girls.

The fourth girl said he appeared to see them.

“It was our cross signal so we could go across the street,” said Coralynne Rowley who was walking ahead of the other three girls. “We didn’t notice it was our turn to walk for, like, three seconds. Then we turned around and realized it so we crossed the street, but the bus driver just kept going. He didn’t even slow down.”

A State Patrol spokesman says the investigator is off for a few days but definitely will charge Shaw in connection with the accident, but can’t say what those charges will be.

“I would have thought for the school department that there would have been a background investigation done and I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had done a blood alcohol test that day if he would have failed it,” said Shaw’s acquaintance.

The school district says they were aware of Shaw’s previous DUI, but because it was 20 years ago he was still hired.

Shaw did not answer the door at his home for comment.

But we also confirmed Shaw drove for an RTD contractor called “First Transit” beginning in October 2010, but left in June of 2011. A First Transit spokesman couldn’t say why.

Two of those girls were treated and released for their injuries, while the third is still at Children’s Hospital in fair condition.

A hospital spokeswoman says the family does not wish to comment at this time.

We also tried to get the police record from Shaw’s DUI arrest in 1992, but Englewood police did not respond to our requests.
