The family of Jimma Reat blames the 911 operator for the murder, and city officials apologized for the decisions made that led to his death.

Reat and three of his brothers were harassed by four other men. The attackers allegedly used racial slurs and broke out a window by throwing a beer bottle at the car Reat was a passenger in.

The brothers escaped to Wheat Ridge from the scene in Denver. But the 911 operator told them to go back to Denver in order to file a report.

The attackers found them before police did, and Jimma Reat was shot and killed.

The city sent the 911 operator a letter of termination effective Tuesday.

Investigators say 64-year-old Datha Nation is under arrest. She’s accused of trying to rob the same bank three times.

Police arrested the older woman Monday night after they say she tried to rob a Wells Fargo branch inside a Safeway grocery store.

Employees told investigators they recognized her from previous robbery attempts.

Each time she had a not threatening bank tellers if they didn’t cooperate, according to police.

The company provides software to health insurance companies. It has about 160 job openings.

The accident happened at 10010 E. Girard Ave. which is near E. Hampden Ave. and S. Havana St.

Nobody was hurt, but the clerk reportedly had just stepped away from the counter right before the car came crashing through and hit it.

Police say the woman driving the car was parked in front of the store. She was getting ready to leave, but the car was in “drive” rather than “reverse” when she stepped on the gas.

Cheyanne Hanger is one of them. The 17-year-old from Westminster was playing volleyball 18 months ago when she landed wrong, tore her left ACL and needed surgery.

 Then just three days after she was cleared by doctors, she tried out for the soccer team, and tore her right ACL. “I planted wrong and I heard it snap,” Hanger said.

Dr. John Polousky, an orthopedic surgeon at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, performed the surgery.

He says young athletes are more competitive at earlier ages and that puts them at more risk. He says more and more of them are needing ACL surgery, some as young as eight years old.

Hanger’s physical therapist, Mike DoVico, says there are a few reasons for that.

First kids are specializing in one sport early on. “There is absolutely no cross-training,” DoVico said.  “They are not developing the core stability that other sports would give them,” he said.

Plus many kids get more screen time with video games than physical play time outside.  DoVico suggests letting kids play on the playground and having them play several recreational sports. 

The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children has developed a program to help train teen athletes and schools how to avoid ACL injuries.

Trainers go into the schools and teach the kids and coaches techniques they can use to strengthen their bodies.

“It was really manual labor, it was hard work, and I felt I wasn’t reaching my potential,” Clark said.

So he enrolled at Red Rocks Community College, excelled in his courses, and got into Colorado School of Mines. And he graduated earlier this month as a petroleum engineer, walking right into a job that will pay him more than $100,000 a year.

“Right out of school you could be making six figures,” said Jean Manning Clark, director of the Mines Career Center. She says students at the school in Golden are getting up to ten job offers each… and they’re pouring in 6 to 8 months before the students even graduate.

It seems people are flocking to the energy industry because in Colorado and around the world, that’s where the jobs are.

Just ask recent Mines graduates Jean-Jose Sopngwi and Andrew Bosela.  Weeks from now, they both start new jobs as petroleum engineers… Sopngwi in Louisiana, Bosela in Africa. 

When Bosela opened his six-figure job offer letter?

“My roommates can attest to the fact that I jumped… I literally hit the roof.  I did hit the roof,” he said.

So what exactly is a petroleum engineer?  It’s basically someone who figures out how to get oil and gas out of the ground.

And why the sudden boom in energy jobs?  Because people who flooded the business during the oil boom in the 1970s are now retiring.  And new drilling technology has led energy companies to figure out how to get oil and natural gas from shale, like they’re doing right now on the western slope of Colorado.  That means more workers are needed.  So if you’re looking to reinvent yourself, and are pretty good at math and science, this could be a good field for you.  And administrators at School of Mines say older, non-traditional students do very well.

“They’re usually more successful because they can bring very transferable skills into the job market, they can bring a maturity level as well,” Manning Clark said.

Still, it isn’t easy work.  And getting a degree is tough.  But David did it.  He leaves in early June to start his new job as a reservoir engineer for BP in Anchorage, AK.

He wanted to make a great life for his wife and three year old daughter.  And in just a few year years, he has gone from making beer boxes, to a dream job… with a dream paycheck to go along with it.

“There are no real words to describe it.  It’s quite a feeling to know that you made it.  That was a goal I set for myself a long time ago. And I finally made it.  And it’s really exciting!”

Kyrie Irving won Rookie of the Year Tuesday, but he really won it before the All-Star break, then lapped the field a couple of times. Awards are funny in that way: The better the winner, the less interesting his coronation. 

But there is one rookie—and only one—who touched Irving’s production on a per-minute basis. And the fact that Kenneth “Manimal” Faried was the rookie who pulled it off is a miracle.

He’s an undersized power forward who can’t shoot, hailing from Morehead State—a college I had never heard of until learning of Faried. 

With the way the 22nd pick in the draft has produced (18.2 points, 13.6 rebounds per 40 per minutes), I wonder if the Cavs regret not pairing Faried with Irving. Tristan Thompson has shown potential, but the Manimal can control the game for stretches with tireless rebounding. READ MORE>>>

Between February 2011 and February 2012, the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area added 6,300 construction jobs, according to the Associated General Contractors of America.  That’s more than anywhere else in the United States. 

Right now, about 137,000 Coloradans are working in construction.  Times are good.

“The first quarter of 2012, we will equal the construction volume and revenue that we had in all of 2011,” said David Sinkey, managing director for Boulder Creek Builders.  His company is hard at work developing the Steel Ranch neighborhood in Louisville.  But there’s a problem.  He can’t find enough construction workers.

“We’re very concerned about the labor force.  We’ve already reached a point in our construction that there’s a limitation on the number of framers and trades-people that are available,” he said.

The problem?  When the economy tanked, and building in Colorado all but stopped a few years ago, lots of construction workers moved away, or got out of the business entirely, because times got so tough.

“Extremely tough,” said Robert Lazarony, a construction workers who was out of work for six and a half months, after the construction company where he’d worked for more than a decade folded during the downturn.

“You’re not always sure what the outcome is going to be,” he said.

But now, he’s back to work, overseeing the building of Steel Ranch homes, and he’s desperate to hire good construction workers.  It’s tough to do, because they’re being snatched up by other builders. 

His advice?  If you’re looking to reinvent yourself… a job in the construction industry might be the way to go.  There are plenty of openings.  Just make sure you have a passion for building.  And make sure you learn how to do it right, before you apply.

“Let them get trained somewhere else and then send them my way,” he joked.

Blake Appleton passed away at his mother’s home in Lake Wales, Florida, his family confirmed.

In a Facebook post, Miranda Appleton wrote: “Heaven just got a lot brighter. Blakey has earned his wings. Blakey was a fighter to the very end, he fought with hope, love, faith and courage.”

Blake underwent 20 operations and dozens of rounds of chemotherapy after doctors discovered a large tumor in his brain in 2008.

He met Tim Tebow, his hero, before a Broncos game in Denver last December.

The victim told investigators she was assaulted on Monday between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the area of 52nd Avenue and Espana Street.

“The teenage female victim was located by passersby at this location, and at this time has not been able to provide police any additional information,” DPD said in a press release Tuesday.

The victim described her attacker as a thin Hispanic male in his 30s with a mustache.

EdNewsColorado.org, a news website that covers education issues across the state, has identified the schools as Beach Court Elementary and Hallett Fundamental Academy.

The principals of both schools have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Beach Court has been among the district’s highest-performing, low-income schools for several years.

“We care deeply about the integrity of our student-achievement assessments,” DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg said in a statement released Tuesday. “Students and their families rely on assessment information to get a sense of how students are doing, and teachers use that information to target and modify instruction to best meet the needs of students. We owe it to our students, their families, and the entire DPS community to ensure the integrity of this performance data, and we want to look carefully to see if any actions have compromised this integrity.” 

According to DPS, experts analyzed whether students’ 2011 CSAP performances varied significantly between multiple choice and written responses, between two schools over two years, and among different types of assessments.  

In addition, DPS and the Colorado Department of Education examined the number of wrong answers that were erased and changed to correct answers.

The results showed Beach Court Elementary and Hallett Fundamental Academy “far exceeded district averages in the number of wrong answers erased and replaced with correct responses,” EdNewsColorado.org reported.

DPS says data from only two of the 162 schools in DPS indicated statistical irregularities across more than one subject or grade level.

CSAP was recently renamed Transitional Colorado Assessment Program, or TCAP.
