Stories of heroism, zest for life and a birthday celebration that turned tragic emerged as family and friends spoke of loved ones killed in the mass shooting at an Aurora movie theater one year ago this week.
Almost all of the 12 victims were young — including a 6-year-old girl who had just learned to swim — with so much life ahead of them.

July 20, 2013
The city of Aurora has several events planned for Saturday July 20, 2013. City officials say they want a day full of meaningful remembrance and continued healing.
The day will begin with a community gathering at the Aurora Municipal Center at the Great Lawn. Gov. John Hickenlooper and Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan will both speak. FOX31 Denver will livestream the ceremony on KDVR.com.
Then from about 9 a.m. till 2 p.m., a series of healing activities will be available at the Municipal Center. Also, residents are encouraged to volunteer for one of a series of community service projects that have been organized all across the city. The projects include painting an emergency shelter or helping the Food Bank of the Rockies.
