DENVER -- Thousands of marijuana smokers are expected in Civic Center Park in downtown Denver on Thursday for the annual 4/20 celebration.
On Tuesday, a new push began to make sure they all get home safe began.
Several thousand people are expected to jam the area in the heart of downtown for the celebration, coming from all over the country.
Getting all those people in and out of downtown under the cloud of marijuana smoke will provide challenges for law enforcement so the Colorado State Patrol is teaming with Uber to try to keep things safe.
“We know that our technology will provide a safer better choice for people out there," said Tracy Breeden with Uber. "Impaired driving is 100 percent preventable, 100 percent available. You have a choice whether you get behind the wheel or not."
“Since 2015, the Colorado State Patrol has issued over 1,500 citations for driving under the influence involving marijuana. That is big," Sgt. Rob Madden said.
Uber and the Colorado Department of Transportation will offer codes for discount rides on Thursday. Some marijuana dispensaries in the Denver area also will be offering ride specials.
