Firefighter hurt in grass fire northeast of Kiowa

ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. — A firefighter was hurt battling a grass fire on Monday, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office said.

The fire was burning 10 to 15 miles northeast of Kiowa off County Road 93, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials estimate the fire to be 60 to 100 acres. It was about 30 percent contained as of 2 p.m.

Winds of 25-35 mph were fueling the fire and the visibility was extremely low, the sheriff’s office said.

One firefighter suffered a broken arm, but officials did not say how he was injured.

By 3:15 p.m., the fire was 95 percent contained.
