DENVER -- Two men are in custody after they crashed a stolen car on Wednesday, the Denver Police Department said.

The suspects carjacked a woman at gunpoint on Wednesday morning as she was putting her 2-year-old child in the vehicle, police said.

The suspects were later identified as Andre Garcia and James Trujillo.

Officers made the arrests just before 4:30 p.m. after a short pursuit near South Lipan Street and West Exposition Avenue. After crashing the vehicle, the two suspects got out of the car and attempted to run.

“He pulled a gun. He was like, ‘Get your son, get him, go.’  I started unbuckling him as fast as I could.  I hoped he wasn’t going to shoot because he had the gun pointed right at my son," the mother said.

The incident happened about 7:30 a.m. in the 900 block of South Perry Street.

Police said the suspect pulled a gun on the woman then took the gray 2013 Dodge Avenger. The woman and child were not taken by the suspect.

No injuries were reported, but the mother said the little boy was clearly scared.

“He was saying, ‘Gun, gun, gun.’ He knew it was a gun," she said.

"They just understand that this was mainly not even them stealing my car. They pointed a gun at a 2-year-old. They should go get a job and get their own car and not steal from people because it's not worth it."

The mother said the theft is a huge financial hit.  She does not have insurance that covers car theft and still owes $11,000 on the loan. Her sister has set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who would like to help.
