8 things to know about Broncos interim head coach Joe DeCamillis

DENVER — Broncos Special Teams Coordinator Joe DeCamillis will be the team’s interim head coach for Thursday night’s game at San Diego.

Head coach Gary Kubiak spent the night in the hospital and will spend the week recuperating from a complex migraine. He was released Monday.

General Manager John Elway said doctors ordered Kubiak not to resume full-scale coaching activities until next Monday.

Here are eight things to know about Joe DeCamillis:

  1. He has worked as a staff member for NFL teams since 1989. His first job was on the staff of Broncos head coach Dan Reeves. DeCamillis worked in football administration.
  2. His first NFL coaching job came in 1991. He was the Broncos’ defensive quality control coach in 1991 and 1992.
  3. DeCamillis followed Dan Reeves to the New York Giants following the 1992 season.
  4. He has guided special teams for six different clubs since that team. says it started with the Giants (1993-1996). Then he was with the Falcons (1997-2006), Jaguars (2007-08), Cowboys (2009-12) and Bears (2013-14) before joining the Broncos to work under Kubiak in 2015.
  5. In May 2009, the Dallas Cowboys’ practice facility collapsed during a windstorm. DeCamillis suffered serious injuries and he had to have surgery to stabilize fractured vertebrae in his neck. Eleven other Cowboys coaches and players were also hurt.
  6. Joe DeCamillis is 51 years old.
  7. He played high school football at Arvada High School. He was an All-American wrestler at the University of Wyoming.
  8. Dana DeCamillis, Joe’s wife, is Dan Reeves’ daughter.

DeCamillis’ job as special teams coordinator is to help improve the team’s returns, takeaways, placekicking and kickoff and punt coverage.
