DENVER — One of the Denver Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit horses had to be put down this week, sparking an internal investigation.

The horse, named MC Hammer, was taken to a veterinarian on Tuesday with symptoms of colic, according to a statement released by the department.

The horse had been “left tied in his stall following a duty assignment the previous afternoon,” the department said.

“The Denver Police Department is currently conducting an Internal Affairs investigation into this incident to determine if there was any negligence by Department personnel,” officials said.

MC Hammer was 10 years old and had been with the Mounted Patrol Unit since November, according to the department.
