Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb hospitalized with digestive issues

DENVER — Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb was admitted to Denver Health Medical Center on Tuesday, hospital officials said in a statement.

Webb will undergo a medical procedure after an episode with diverticulitis last week, hospital officials said.

Diverticulitis is “an inflammation or infection in one or more small pouches in the digestive tract,” according to the Mayo Clinic. It can cause severe abdominal pain, fever and nausea.

“The procedure will require him to be hospitalized for a few days, but it is expected he will be able to return home later this week,” said Kelli Christensen, a spokeswoman for the hospital.

“On behalf of former Mayor Webb, his wife Wilma J. Webb would like to thank the community for their outpouring of support and respectfully requests privacy at this time,” Christensen said.

Webb’s wife said she took him to the emergency room on Sept. 12 because he had been dealing with digestive and intestinal issues for the past three weeks.
