FBI searching for ‘Wicked Wig of the West’ bandit hitting metro-area banks

DENVER -- The FBI is searching for a woman who is accused of robbing five banks in the Denver metro area in the past month.

The FBI has dubbed the wig-wearing woman the "Wicked Wig of the West" bandit.

"The bandit has been targeting banks exclusively in Safeway/Albertsons grocery stores, including one Chase, one First and three Wells Fargo banks," the FBI said in a news release. "She always enters wearing a wig and sunglasses in disguise and demands money, threatening to use a gun."

A gun has not been used, but the FBI considers her to be armed and dangerous. After getting money, the woman usually runs out of the grocery store and escapes on foot.

The robberies started Aug. 23 and the last one was Monday. Banks were hit in Denver, Wheat Ridge and Northglenn, the FBI said.

The woman wore a black Slipknot concert shirt in one robbery and a Broncos cap in another, the FBI said.

She is described as being about 5-foot-2, weighing about 120 pounds and being 40 to 50 years old.

Wells Fargo is offering a reward up to a $5,000 in addition to the $2,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers for any tips that lead to her identification and arrest.

Anyone who has information or recognizes the woman should call Denver Metro Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
