High school athlete dies after collapsing at cross country event
BROOMFIELD, Colo. — Peak to Peak Charter School in Lafayette is remembering a student-athlete who died after collapsing at a cross country meet in Broomfield on Friday, the school said.
School officials said 18-year-old Brandon Ries was competing in a 5K race on Friday when he collapsed.
Students and teammates remembered Ries with a slow lap around the track at Peak to Peak Charter School on Saturday morning.
North Metro Fire said the 911 call was placed around 5:50 p.m. and paramedics were administering CPR on scene.
Ries was transported to an area hospital, where he died, North Metro Fire said.
“Brandon was part of the heart and soul of our school, and represented the best of us all,” the school said.
School officials said counselors will be available to students at Peak to Peak on Monday.
