GOLDEN, Colo. -- A crane accident closed eastbound Interstate 70 at Sixth Avenue on Sunday night, causing a traffic nightmare for drivers returning from the mountains, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.
The lanes reopened late Sunday night, but CDOT crews will return Monday morning to work on repairs.
CDOT officials said the truck was headed westbound on Sixth Avenue when it hit the overpass. CDOT and the Colorado State Patrol quickly shut down all of the eastbound I-70 lanes and all of Sixth Avenue so crews could inspect the damage.
The CSP said the crane driver misjudged the size and height of the bridge. The right lane and the shoulder area of the bridge suffered the most damage from the impact.
There is no exact word on how long repairs will take. The driver of the crane has not been identified.
