LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A 79-year-old man in a wheelchair was killed after being struck by an SUV on Friday morning, the Lakewood Police Department said.

The collision happened on West 14th Avenue at Reed Street just before 8 a.m.

Police said Stephen Tinoco was in the wheelchair and going westbound in the eastbound lane on West 14th Avenue.

The driver of a Ford Explorer was going eastbound, into the “glaring sun,” and was making a left turn onto Reed when he hit Tinoco, police said.

Tinoco was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Explorer remained at the scene, police said.

The driver is not suspected of any alcohol or drugs, and is not being cited for any violations, police said.
