BOULDER, Colo. — A man accused of assaulting and threatening to kill his roommate was arrested Friday morning after a standoff that lasted more than six hours, the Boulder Police Department said.

Kelly Engel, 50, was taken into custody shortly after 6 a.m. after the standoff in the 3500 block of Kirkwood Place.

Police said Engel allegedly assaulted his roommate then left. He returned home later Thursday, and threatened to kill his roommate then himself.

Police were called just after 11:30 p.m. and Engel told officers that he was armed.

The roommate was removed safely from the residence and the Boulder SWAT team responded just after 2:30 a.m.. The SWAT team used a diversionary device in an attempt to apprehend Engel.

Reverse emergency notification calls were placed to 15 homes in the neighborhood telling residents to shelter in place.

Engel was booked into the Boulder County Jail on one count of felony assault on an at-rise adult. Additional charges will be determined once the investigation is completed.
