Shots fired during arrest on Montview Boulevard in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. — An officer fired at least one shot while arresting a suspect on East Montview Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon, the Aurora Police Department said.

Officers were attempting to arrest Michael Smith, 31, for parole violations in connection with kidnapping and motor vehicle theft convictions in the 11600 block of East Montview, police said in a statement.

“Members of the Strategic Response Team were able to locate Smith at approximately 1 p.m. at Montview Bar and Grill,” police said.

When Smith left the bar, officers confronted him, but he ignored their orders, police said.

Officers tried “less lethal” methods first, but Smith “brandished a handgun” and ran away, police said. That’s when an officer fired at least one shot. The shot did not hit Smith.

Smith was then shot with a stun gun and taken into custody, police said. He was taken to hospital to be checked out and was later released.

The investigation is still underway.

Smith is in custody on the parole violation. New charges are pending, police said.
